Microsoft's Cortana Assistant Gets New Features Including Outlook Integration

Microsoft's Cortana Assistant Gets New Features Including Outlook Integration

Microsoft at its Build 2016 conference in San Francisco announced several major announcements including Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The Redmond giant also revealed new features for its voice-based virtual assistant Cortana which will be available in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Microsoft says that Cortana will now “pro-actively make suggestions” for users through-out the day such as offering to buy lunch or arrange transportation. The company added that Cortana will be available above the lock screen, which will offer users quicker access to the personal assistant for tasks without unlocking the PC.

One of the most notable additions include Outlook integration which will mean that Cortana will able to check mails and calendar to offer suggestions based on the schedule. Microsoft showed off some of the examples how Cortana with Outlook integration will be useful for users such as for sending mails to colleagues without opening the Outlook app. Outlook calendar integration includes the ability reschedule events.

Integration with Android phones was also improved, with the ability to sync text messages with a Windows PC.

“And only Cortana works across your devices – you can complete certain notification-based tasks on your Windows or Android phone, such as receiving and sending text messages, on your PC,” said Microsoft’s Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President, Windows and Devices Group, in a blog post.

Alongside announcing new APIs for third party app integrations, the company also announced a separate app section in the Windows Store for users to find best apps to work with its personal assistant. Microsoft calls it Cortana Collection in the Windows Store.

“Developers now have full access to Cortana’s proactive intelligence through proactive actions, allowing your apps to perform tasks based on user context by linking existing actions in your deep-link enabled apps and websites,” said Myerson, speaking about the potential of third-party integrations.

Microsoft’s Cortana personal digital assistant launched couple of years back has over the years become”smart” with new feature additions and has also been unveiled for Android as well as iOS platforms. Last year, Microsoft had even claimed that Cortana for Android could replace Google Now as default assistant.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Stays Committed to Bots After Tay Debacle

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Stays Committed to Bots After Tay Debacle

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said his company is committed to the emerging market for artificial intelligence-based chat software, one week after the company’s first Internet chat bot in the US was so manipulated by users that it had to be pulled down.

“It’s a simple concept, yet it’s very powerful,” Nadella said about the strategy the company has dubbed Conversations as a Platform. “It is about taking the power of human language and applying it more pervasively in all our computing.”

In a keynote speech Wednesday at the company’s Build conference for software developers in San Francisco, Nadella outlined Microsoft’s strategy for conversation-based products working with bots software that use artificial intelligence to automate tasks as well as tools for developers to create their own.

Nadella has been trying to expand Microsoft’s reach and influence in AI, emphasizing how the technology can augment mobile and cloud-computing products. He views the bot strategy as a key way to bring the benefits of artificial intelligence to businesses, consumers and developers. The CEO predicts such programs will dominate the next generation of computing, replacing apps in some scenarios.

On March 23, Microsoft released Tay, an online AI chat bot designed to mimic the personality of a teenager, to attract millennial users. Yet the company had to yank the program after Internet users taught it to spew racist, sexist and pornographic remarks in what the company called a “coordinated attack” that took advantage of a “critical oversight.”

In his keynote, Nadella said the company is taking a principled approach to AI in the wake of Tay’s misbehavior. “We want to build tech so it gets the best of humanity not the worst,” he said.

While looking to the future, the company also promoted upgrades to the product it has been most closely identified with for decades the Windows operating system. At Build, Windows chief Terry Myerson said Windows 10, released in July, now has 270 million active users. That’s four times the adoption pace of the much-maligned Windows 8 and 1.5 times that of the more popular Windows 7.

The Redmond, Washington-based company has pledged that Windows 10 will be on 1 billion devices within two to three years of release. Myerson also announced an update to Windows 10, coming this summer.

For the developers in the audience, Microsoft said it will make it easier to add Windows security features to their websites. By adding a few lines of code, developers can let people authenticate themselves on sites using Windows Hello, the company’s secure logon system that uses face scans and fingerprints, rather than passwords.

The company is also helping developers update their Windows programs with the ability to let people draw inside applications with a stylus. The feature, called Windows Ink, would let a hiker sketch a route on a digital map, and the device would automatically calculate the distance, for example.

Microsoft isn’t the only company pursuing bots. Facebook is opening up its Messenger app to bots that assist with shopping and appointments, and the social-media leader is expected to expand that effort in coming months. The Wall Street Journal reported in December that Google is working on bots, and the AI programs are rampant on messaging services like Slack and Telegram, among others. Tencent’s WeChat, one of the inspirations for Microsoft’s strategy, has been an early leader.

Bots will be “one of the future tenets of the mobile business,” said Michael Facemire, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc. Cortana, and Microsoft’s strength with developers, will be an advantage as the software maker embarks on this strategy, he said.

Microsoft demonstrated its Skype video calling and Cortana digital assistant technology working with bots to do things like book a hotel and schedule deliveries. In one demo, Cortana popped up during a Skype chat to tell the user there was a cupcake delivery bot looking for her. It let this person, Skype executive Lilian Rincon, share her location with the bot and track the confection. During a video discussion about an upcoming conference trip, Cortana worked with a bot created for Westin because it knew Rincon had preferred status at that hotel chain.

Microsoft will also update Cortana so customers can access it without first unlocking computing devices, letting developers integrate it more easily into apps and other gadgets. That may help Microsoft or third-party hardware companies make microphones or other devices that let users ask Cortana to do things for them at home, according to Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi. It’d be similar to how people use Amazon Inc.’s Echo devices.

Microsoft also showed a video of an artificial intelligence program for vision-impaired customers that answered questions about food and prices on a restaurant menu using a mobile phone camera to read and voice software to speak.

Still, the Tay debacle loomed large over the proceedings. Though Microsoft plans to recommission the bot once it’s been made safer from exploitation, Gartner analyst Chris Howard said the ease and speed of Tay’s public re-programming may delay corporate adoption.

Snapchat Ramps Up Messaging Service With 'Chat 2.0'

Snapchat Ramps Up Messaging Service With 'Chat 2.0'

Snapchat is dressing up its messaging with an upgraded video chat and animations, part of the social network’s efforts to be the preferred service for young users.

“We’re excited to introduce Chat 2.0,” the California startup announced on its blog Tuesday.

“You can start by sending a few chats, and when your friend shows up, start talking or video chatting instantly with one tap,” it said.

“Your friend can simply listen if you want to sing them a song, or watch if you have a new puppy to show them.”

The new chat platform aims for improved video chat with new features such as sending an audio note or a “sticker” chosen from a range of images similar to those on Facebook’s Messenger app.

First gaining notoriety for its disappearing messages, Snapchat has been growing rapidly to a base of some 100 million, with particular appeal to young users, as it expands its partnerships with various media organizations.

The Los Angeles-based company, which reportedly turned down a $3 billion buyout from Facebook in 2013, was valued at more than $15 billion (roughly Rs. 99,631 crores) in its latest funding round.

But it is facing competition from Facebook and others seeking to be the preferred messaging platform – that can draw users into more services and open up possibilities for advertisers.

“What we love most about the new Chat is how easily you can transition between all these ways of communicating – just like you do in person,” the Snapchat team said on the blog.

“When that’s possible, you aren’t texting, calling, or video chatting you’re just talking. We’ve been working on this redesign for a while we can’t wait to hear what you think!”

UberMoto 'Bike Sharing' Service Launched in Gurgaon

UberMoto 'Bike Sharing' Service Launched in Gurgaon

After Bengaluru, taxi-hailing app Uber today launched a pilot of its bike sharing product UberMoto in Gurgaon.

“Uber Tuesday announced a pilot of Uber’s bike sharing product – uberMoto in Gurgaon… This follows our agreement with the government of Haryana to introduce technology based ride-sharing services in the state,” it said in a statement.

The company has set minimum fare at Rs. 15, followed by Rs. 3 per km and Rs. 1 per min of ride-time charges. The minimum fare is Rs. 20. It will compete with companies like Baxi.

“UberMoto works towards the vision of reducing congestion by helping fill every empty seat on the bikes on road. It enables riders to push a button and share a motorbike ride within minutes,” Uber Delhi General Manager Gagan Bhatia said.

It’s a great way for people to save time and money on short trips across town and provides last mile connectivity especially to and from the metro stations, he added.

Also, Uber will not charge any service fee for the duration of this pilot and will submit a key findings report to the Government, analysing the benefits of bike sharing in the city.

The US-based company had launched a pilot for the product in Bengaluru earlier this month but state road authorities had complained that it lacked requisite permissions to offer two-wheeler taxi service.

Uber said it had extensive discussions with the relevant authorities and made modifications to the pilot service.

It had said it will also not charge any service fee for the period of this pilot and was essentially encouraging “bikepooling” aimed at decongesting city roads.

The company will prepare a similar report addressing the viability of the product for Bengaluru as well.

Uber’s rival, Ola had also launched a similar bike-sharing service in Bengaluru. However, following the complaint, the Softbank-backed firm had discontinued the service.

To book a bike ride, users can choose the UberMoto option from the Uber app and enter their pickup location and payment method and request a ride.

Similar to cabs, users will get driver’s details straight like name, photo and details of the motorbike.

Uber’s standard product safety features include GPS tracking, 2-way feedback and the ability to share trip details with family and friends.

Uber Returns to Spanish Streets in Search of Regulatory U-Turn

Uber Returns to Spanish Streets in Search of Regulatory U-Turn

Uber will be back in Spain from Wednesday, after regulation and hostility from local taxi firms drove it off the streets at the end of 2014.

The US company, embroiled in disputes with authorities around the world after a rapid international expansion, said it is launching UberX, which unlike its previous UberPOP service, uses professionally licensed drivers.

Uber’s first attempt drew the ire of traditional taxi drivers and government suspicion, prompting a Spanish judge to rule that it did not comply with the country’s laws and represented unfair competition.

Uber’s ambition to conquer Spain’s taxi market is unchanged, but this time round the firm has opted for a more limited launch, targeting the private hire sector in Madrid, representing only 10 percent of all taxis in the capital city.

But Uber’s director for Southern Europe told Reuters it hopes that with its aggressive prices – they will be 30 percent less than for a standard cab – it will win over consumers and convince politicians to revise Spain’s regulations.

“I think that Spain is ready,” Carles Lloret said in an interview. “(But) there are services which cannot yet be launched because the regulation is not sufficiently agile.”

“We want to be transparent with the government and we want to maintain a very open dialogue to see how we can build a regulatory framework in Spain that makes sense in both a European and a digital context,” he said.

Although Lloret did not reveal the size of Uber’s initial launch, he said it could go on to create 30,000 jobs in Spain if the country’s regulation is changed.

For now, Uber is however not considering expanding into other Spanish cities, and neither will it offer UberPool, for people to share cars, or UberBLACK’s more luxurious offering.

In Barcelona, its food delivery service UberEATS, which was launched last year, closed after only five months.

Samsung Follows Apple Into China With Its Own Mobile Payment Service

Samsung Follows Apple Into China With Its Own Mobile Payment Service

South Korea’s Samsung Tuesday announced the launch of its mobile payment service in China, where it is likely to struggle in an already crowded market that arch-rival Apple entered nearly six weeks ago.

The world’s second largest economy is also the world’s biggest smartphone market, and Samsung Payhas a powerful partner in China bank card provider UnionPay which has links to the central bank.

But unlike most other countries, mobile payment systems are already well-established in China, with local providers dominating the market.

As an outsider Samsung will also have to compete with Apple, which launched its own Apple Paysystem last month also in partnership with Union Pay.

The South Korean electronics giant said its service currently supports selected credit and debit cards from nine Chinese banks and is available on its top-end Galaxy smartphones, with mid-range models to follow.

Like its California-based rival, Samsung Pay’s initial challenge will be securing a foothold in such a competitive market place.

China had 359 million online payment users in mid-2015, up almost 18 percent in six months, according to the state-backed China Internet Network Information Center.

Mobile transactions were valued at some CNY 9.3 trillion ($1.4 trillion) last year, up an annual 57 percent, one industry estimate showed.

The dominant mobile and online payment providers are e-commerce giant Alibaba with nearly three-quarters of the market, followed by Tencent operator of the popular messaging app WeChat which has some 17 percent, according to Beijing-based BigData Research.

A major issue for Samsung is the recent downturn in the popularity of its smartphones in China.

It was China’s top smartphone maker in 2012 and 2013, but domestic manufacturer Xiaomi took the throne in 2014.

In the fourth quarter of last year, Samsung ranked sixth in China with a 7.0 percent market share, compared to 13 percent for third-placed Apple.

The Apple brand commands a strong following in China, especially as a status symbol among the emerging middle class.

WhatsApp for Android Update Adds Quick Replies From Notifications

WhatsApp for Android Update Adds Quick Replies From Notifications

A new WhatsApp for Android update with support for quick replies via notifications is now available to select users. The new feature is only available in the latest version 2.12.560 which is currently available to beta testers who’ve signed up on Google Play.

WhatsApp for Android v2.12.560 is not available yet via the regular Google Play listing, or WhatsAppwebsite. The new version lets users quick reply to messages right from the notification panel. After the update, users will see no difference in the notification alert when a message arrives. However, on expanding the specific notification bar, an option to ‘Reply’ will now be seen below the notification.

On tapping the ‘Reply’ option users would see a full screen quick reply overlay along with a dialogue box and keyboard at the bottom for typing out a reply. The quick reply feature sends the reply without opening the app. Users can also tap on the message to open the full conversation in the app. Notably, an update to the WhatsApp for iPhone (v2.12.16) available earlier this month added the ability to quick reply to in-app notifications.

WhatsApp is not the only app offering the quick reply to notifications feature as Google’s Hangouts app also added the same feature in January.

WhatsApp for Android received an update earlier this month that brought text formatting, improved file sharing, and more. The update allowed users to format text inside messages as bold and italics. The update also allowed Android users to send pdf files not only from the device storage but from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive accounts as well.

Facebook Messenger May Soon Let You Pay in Offline Stores

Facebook Messenger May Soon Let You Pay in Offline Stores: Report

Over the past few months, Facebook has been aggressively making its instant messenger Messengermore capable by adding the ability to send money to a friend and talk to an AI bot. It seems the company has two more interesting features lined up, if the code of the iOS app is any indication. According to a report, Facebook could soon add in-store payment option for goods and services and introduce new chat options.

Comments on the code of the Messenger app for iPhone reveal that Facebook is working on a feature that would allow users to “pay directly in Messenger when you pick up the item” in a store without the need of cash, reports The Information.

The addition of this feature to Messenger, which recently announced it has hit 800 million monthly active users, could make it serve as a mobile retail hub. It appears Facebook wants users to shop at brick and mortar stores by using its app. The report notes that a handful of retailers such as Everlane and Zulily are using Messenger for handling customer service. According to the report, Facebook also plans to bring ads to messages between users. The timeframe for this rollout is slated to be by the end of June.

It appears Facebook is also working on a “secret conversations” option in Messenger. It’s not clear whether this means that the company wants to further bolster security in Messenger, or introduce Snapchat-like ephemeral messages. Facebook also seems to be experimenting with chat bots, possibly adding the ability to have it book a taxi ride for users. The report adds Messenger for iPhone code contains mentions of calendar sync features, the ability to share article quotes with friends, and status messages for select friends.

Google Camera App Tipped to Get Google Goggles Features

Google Camera App Tipped to Get Google Goggles Features

Internet giant Google is rumoured to include an extra modification of Google Goggles to the officialGoogle Camera app in Android devices for searching information by just taking a picture.

The extra functionality is nothing new but the implementation of Google Goggles technology the search giant already uses, Slash Gear reported last week.

Google Goggles is an augmented reality (AR) app that allows user to make a search by taking a picture of anything. For example, to search for the creator of a painting, one can click a picture through Google Goggle app and it will find you the details of the painting from its database.

Goggles can read text in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish, and translate it into other languages.

Goggles also works as a barcode/ QR code scanner. It can recognise famous landmarks, translate by taking a picture of foreign language text, add contacts by scanning business cards or QR codes, solve Sudoku puzzles and find similar products.

In Google Goggles, one can only search the whole image, which has proven to bring plenty of discrepancies, the report said.

Images often display plenty of distractions, background items and other objects that may throw off a search result.

However, according to the report, there will be a new feature integrated, allowing users to outline the specific areas of the image in order to directly target their searches.

For example, if one wants to find the model number of a Nike shoe in a picture having a lot of other stuff, the user can select that shoe and outline it to focus the search.

Furthermore, it is said this technology has also been tested in “wearable computing devices”, suggesting this technology may be incorporated with other products like Google Glass and VR headsets.

Google Goggles was launched in 2009 as a visual search technology app but after a few years the company stopped updating it and it fell by the wayside.

Google may merge this app directly with the camera so it comes incorporated in all phones.
